The unlikelihood of Provincial Councils elections being held has heightened after a meeting President Maithripala Sirisena held this week to discuss the matter.
Taking part in the discussions were members of the Executive Committee of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) which included seven parties in the ‘Joint Opposition.’
At the meeting held at President Sirisena’s official residence, participants disagreed on the electoral system under which the PC polls should be conducted.
As a result, a committee headed by UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Ameraweera has now been appointed to go into the matter further.
The terms of several Provincial Councils have now lapsed and the terms of three more councils end this month and three more next year.
