“End Corporal Punishment” (ECP) in Sri Lanka – Vision 2020 campaign will this week hold a ‘Walk for Real Change’, calling for an End to Corporal Punishment in schools. The “Stop Child Cruelty” (SCC) in partnership with the Sri Lanka Foundation (SLF) and the Presidential Secretariat’s “Daruwan Surakum” will walk from the SLF to Independence Square, where a petition signed by about 2,000 committed enthusiasts who are against violence (both physical and mental) on students in schools, will be handed over to President Maithripala Sirisena.

Following a Red Alert issued by the United Nations Committee on Rights of the Child (UNCRC), in February 2018, the group has geared up and produced a ‘Pentagon Proposal’ that will include 5 overarching components essential to make ECP a reality. The 5 components refer to the main arm of the government responsible for the implementation of the proposals.

The details of the Pentagon Proposals will be revealed on September 30 (today), containing stages by which ECP can be achieved by 2020.
“The UNCRC Red Alert has been signed by 152 countries, of which, 131 countries have already banned Corporal Punishment. Sri Lanka, as a signatory, has still to protect its children,” the SCC said. - CC
