Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara has asked for a report on the decision by the Western Provincial Council (WPC) to import over 100 luxury chairs at the cost of Rs 86m. “Once I get the report I will hold an inquiry and my decision will be made known to the public,” Governor Nanayakkara told the Sunday Times without elaborating.

The decision to import the chairs, each costing Rs 640,000, for the chamber of the new WPC building in Battaramulla, has come under heavy public criticism.
WPC Chief Secretary Pradeep Yasaratna said that the import of the chairs has been temporarily suspended by the Governor.

He added that once the exact specifications of the chairs are decided, government procurement guidelines will be followed when placing an order for them.
He said the order had been placed with a local company which in turn had placed the order with a Belgium company.
