Five elephants were found dead in a Polonnaruwa marshy land along one of the main tributaries of the Mahaweli River, wildlife officials said yesterday. Residents said they saw the carcass of an elephant calf in the same area a few days ago.  The wildlife officials said that the elephants had strayed into the marsh and got stuck in the mud while they were in search of food. The postmortem will take place at the Girithale wildlife training center, they said. Pic by Karu Gamage.
