Minister Dr Amunugama declared there has to be a change in our present Education system, if our youth are to secure gainful employment that will ensure them a prosperous life. Dr Amunugama wasspeaking at a ceremony in Polonnaruwa recently to declare open development projects in the President’s Polonnaruwa Development programme,

The Minister said there are already 1.2 million persons employed in the public service. He asked his audience to consider whether, in that situation, the public service is likely to be able to absorb more people. He pointed out there have to be other avenues of better employment for the youth and for that, they must get an Education and Training that will make them employable in such new avenues of industrial and commercial employment.

He said that, “Today, intelligent and capable children often miss the chance of entering University by just a few marks. Even if they succeed in entering University, there is no guarantee that the traditional higher education they get there will ensure them employment.” “Therefore, the need of the hour is that youth must be now given a meaningful Technical and Vocational Education which assures them jobs in the present day world of work. Such an education could be of the same level as traditional university education,” he said

The Minister said that a good Technical Education institution that would be even better than a university, will be established in Polonnaruwa, to realise the President’s dream of ensuring to the people of the district, just like in other areas of the country, a prosperous and dignified future.
