Christ Church beat STC in Matale Hockey battle
A goal each by Ashen Bandara and Sampath Dissanayake gave Christ Church College Matale a 2-0 win over fancied St. Thomas’ Matale in the final to emerge champions at the Central Province schools hockey championships 2018 for boys Under-20 concluded at Edward Park hockey ground in Matale.
A total of 12 boys teams 7 from Kandy educational region – Trinity , Kingswood, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, Sri Sumangala, St. Sylvesters and St. Anthony’s Katugastota and five from Matale educational region – St. Thomas’, Zahira, Christ Church, Vijaya and Sirimavo Bandaranayake MV participated in the tournament conducted by Ministry of Education to select the best three teams to represent CP at the National Schools Hockey Championships 2018 to be held shortly.
St. Thomas’ Matale beat Dharmaraja Kandy 4-2 and Christ Church Matale beat Zahira Matale 3-0 in the semi-finals.
In the decider for the third place Zahira Matale beat Dharmaraja Kandy 2-1.
Preliminary round matches of the tournament were played at Peradeniya university ground.
