MoE directive against Class teachers’ tuition classes, a farce: Union

View(s):

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said last week that the Ministry of Education (MoE) directive to its officials to crack down on teachers who compel their students to follow their tuition classes, is a scam to appease the public.  CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin, while agreeing the problem exists, said that, “If the Government is serious, it should bring in Legislation to punish teachers who compel students to take tuition from them.

He said the Government should issue a Circular to schools, banning such activity and enforce strict legal measures on teachers who directly or indirectly influence students. It is learned that teachers in Government schools are forcing their class students to take tuition from them, after school hours.

Last week MoE officials were directed to set up a hotline (1988) to receive complaints from students who are compelled to take tuition from their class teachers.
Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyasam reportedly said the MoE will act on the complaint and take strict disciplinary action against the teachers concerned.
