Medical Faculty for University of Sabaragamuwa by October 2018

The University of Sabaragamuwa (UoS) will soon have its own Medical Faculty, as proposed in the 2018 Budget, said Higher Education Ministry Project Director P.G. Jayasinghe. Mr Jayasinghe told the Education Times that the Faculty will be ready to open by October this year, and initially, they hope to enrol 75 students, going up to 200 per batch. The Faculty will be sited in 2 locations- one close to the UoS on a 2-acre plot, and the other on a 20-acre plot close to Ratnapura new town, near the General Hospital.

The section near the UoS will cost Rs 500 million, while the other close to the General Hospital will cost Rs 3.5 billion, and be constructed in the first half of 2019.
“This will be part of the programme to have more Medical Faculties for undergraduates,” he said. The academic activities of the UoS was initially affiliated to the Sri Jayawardenapura University, when it was opened in 1992, and declared a national university 4 years later. Presently, it has 7 Faculties
The Government intends to have Medical Faculties at Wayamba and Moratuwa Universities as well.

In 2018, the UoS expects to enrol 75 Medical students. The building to launch the course will have a 100-seat conference hall, academic and non-academic rooms, library, canteen and hostel facilities for 80 undergraduates. - Damith Wickremasekara
