The Suraksha Insurance Medical Benefit scheme for students has been expanded to cover all illnesses including treatment for Cancer and Kidney diseases.
The directive came following requests made to Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam who initated discussions with the
Sri Lanka Insurance Co. to expand the coverage.

To date, over Rs 80 million has been paid to 10,100 students for benefits claimed, since the launch of the scheme in October 2017.
The Education Ministry has to date issued cards to 1.2 million students, of the 4.2 million student population, though the card is not required to obtain benefits from the scheme Minister Kariyawasam said they intend to introduce a Health Fund, enabling students gain more Health benefits, if the Insurance cover is found insufficient. -DW
