President of the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka, Maj. Gen. Palitha Fernando on Thursday said that there’s a drop in female participation in athletics. Speaking at a press conference held to announce the forthcoming Junior National Athletics Championship, Gen. Fernando said only a few athletes have entered the event.

“This is not a good development for athletics,” he said . “We you look at the entries, we observe a major  drop in female participation.

The four-day Junior National Athletics Championships will be held from April 23-26 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. The event which will serve as the selection trial for South Asian Junior Athletics Championships and the Asian Junior Athletics Championships will see hundreds of promising athletes competing in four age groups- under 16, under 18, under 20 and under 23.

The South Asian Junior Athletics Championships will be held from May 5-6 in Colombo and the Asian Junior Athletics Championships will be held in Japan on  June 4 and 5.
