Parliament will shortly approve a salary hike for the Chief Justice and the Judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. The Cabinet of Ministers on February 20, granted approval for the pay hike, in keeping with the Cabinet Memorandum submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena, to revise the salaries and allowances of the Chief Justice and the Judges of the Superior Courts, with effect from January 1, 2018.

The salary increase will be in keeping with the document prepared by the Salaries and Cadre Commission, and is effective from January 1, 2018, with a salary conversion to be effected on a step-by-step basis. There will also be an increase to the pensionable allowance of 25% of the salary paid at present. It will be increased to 50% and will be calculated on the basis of the salary step of the newly revised salary.

The Judges will also be paid a monthly professional allowance of Rs 150,000, which is reckoned for pension purposes, in place of the special non-pensionable allowance of Rs 15,000 per month, currently paid. Parliament is vested with the powers to revise the salaries of the Chief Justice as well as those of the Superior Courts.
