De Abrew House overall champs of Musaeus College Sports meet

Marked by a colourful drill display the Annual Athletic Meet of Musaeus College came to an end with De Abrew House emerging overall champions at the NCC Grounds last week. Named after the four founders of the school – Besant, De Abrew, Higgins and Olcott, the four houses competed for supremacy in the track exhibiting true sportswoman ship and maintained the true traditions of their alma mater.

De Abrew House walked away with the glittering championship trophy scoring 251 points followed by Besant House with 244, Olcott House with 169 points and Higgins House with 164 points occupying 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions respectively. Kaveesha Periyapperuma of Besant House won the Under 20 Individual championship while Nelumi Wedagama of De Abrew House clinched the Under 18 Individual championship. Representing Higgins House Yuhansa Hewagamage stood above in the Under 16 category to win the Individual championship while up and coming youngsters Senethma Edirisooriya of De Abrew House and Sanuki Gunaratne of Besant House won the Under 14 and Under 12 Individual championships.

Apart from the drill display and the march past the other event that stole the limelight was the Teachers’ race. The young teachers belonging for the four houses took to the track to show their prowess to the young and enthusiastic students who cheered them from beautifully decorated houses.

This well organised and well worked off event took place under the guidance of Mrs. Nelum Senadira, the Principal of the school and was well supported by the staff members.
Track events and relay events were evenly contested and the winners received tremendous ovations from the vast gathering which included school girls, old girls, parents and well wishers present.

Rear Admiral Jagath Ranasinghe, Vice Chancellor Sir John Kothalawala Defence Academy graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and distributed the awards.
