Eranga Madushanka Nayanajith of Janadhipathi Vidyalaya, Ambagasdowa and Nirosha Dilrukshi Samarakoon of Welimada Central emerged boys and girls champions respectively at the 8th annual ‘U.G.M. Muthubanda challenge trophy’ all island schools semi marathon event held at the Wilgamuwa town (Laggala electorate) in Matale.

This annual athletic event which was organised and conducted by the central province education department together with U.G.M. Foundation saw over 300 athletes (boys and girls) taking part.

In the boys semi marathon Eranga Madushanka Nayanajith (Janadhipathi V, Ambagasdowa) was placed first with a best timing of 1hr and 20.31mts, while Ravinda Devinda (Mayurapada MMV, Narammala) finished second followed by Ramesh Rajapaksha (Hombawa MV) third.

Fourth place was taken by U.M. Thilakarathna (Maraka MV) while the other respective places were taken by H.M.C.N. Kumara, W.M. Samith (Rangiri Dambulla NS), L.D. Premarathna (Madakumbura MV), and C.L. Kulathunga (Sidhartha MMV Ukuwela)

Nirosha Dilrukshi Samarakoon (Welimada central) clocked 1h 35.55mts to emerge the winner in the girls semi marathon event, while her schoolmate Nayomi Kanchana (Welimada central) was placed close second followed by Thakshila Dilrukshi Pathirana (Janadhipathi V, Ambagasdowa) securing the third place. Other respective places were taken by I.D. Weerasingha (St. Anthonys girls Katugastota) and B.G.D. Wijerathna (Mahamaya Kandy).

In the central province school boys 5 km road race Muditha Dananjaya Alwis of Sri Rahula college Katugastota clocked 16.24mts to emerge the winner while Dilantha Mahagedara (Poramadulla central) finished second followed by Nuwan Sanjaya Bandara (Sri Rahula college Katugastota ) third. Other respective places were taken by G.J.L. Bandara (Maraka MV) and A.P. Wishwathilaka (Sri Rahula College Katugastota).

Maraka MV Laggala Matale excelled to win the first three places in the CP schools girls 5 km road race. 1. Thakshila Arundathi Chandrasiri ( 21.16 m ) Maraka MV, 2. Ishara Ranathunga – Maraka MV 3. Ireshika Rathnayake – Maraka MV, 4. K. Hekashini – Akuramboda Weera Keppitipola Central. 5. J.L. Jayarathna – Maraka MV

Director of sports central province education department Athula Jayawardhana was the chief guest at the presentation ceremony while Wilgamuwa zonal director of education E.S. Pananwala , Dr. Janaka Wijesooriya (MOH WIlgamuwa) , M.G. Gnanasiri (principal Naminioya MV) graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
