A Kiri-ammawarunge Danaya was held for 600 Kiri Ammas to mark the 50th anniversary of the damage caused to the Sigiriya rock paintings.

The Danaya took place at Sigriya Madya Maha Vidyalaya in the early hours of yesterday. The event marked the damage caused by a group of people in 1967 when they applied green paint over the world famous fescoes and scraped off some areas of the art.

Several youth groups organised the meritorious event yesterday which was the day the damage was done to this world heritage site. At the event, the ancient king was remembered and the blessings of the gods were invoked on the country.

‘Sigriya Surakime’ organisation secretary Lionel Gunasekara, said that the event was held to remind people of the incident and prevent such incidents in the future.
