The 43rd National Sports Festival organised and conducted by the Ministry of Sports hit a new low when the traditional Games Torch failed to light up throughout the second day of the meet at the Kotawila National Stadium in Matara yesterday.

Even during the opening ceremony of the Sports Festival on Friday, two former athletes from the Southern Province, Sujith Rohana and Sriyani Dhammika also struggled to light the Games Torch as it was too tall.

This is the first time in more than 15 years that the Games Torch failed to light up following a similar scenario which occurred at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.

So far, only one Sri Lanka record has been established in the meet through Anitha Jegatheeswaran (Women’s pole vault) of Northern Province on the opening day on Friday.

Western Province put themselves in contention to retain the overall championship for another year after they built up a huge lead in the gold medals tally over their rivals.

Western Province finished the penultimate day with a total of 91 Gold Medals well ahead of their closest rivals Central Province which had collected a total of 37 Gold Medals.

In fact, Western Province have emerged overall champions on 42 occasions with Southern Province winning the overall title in 1975.

North Western Province were placed third with a total of 22 Gold Medals followed by Sabaragamuwa Province and North Central Province with 18 Gold Medals each.

In addition, Southern Province have dropped to sixth position with just 13 Gold Medals followed by Uva Province with nine Gold Medals, Northern Province with six Gold Medals and Eastern Province with three Gold Medals.
