Sarasavi Uyana Maha Vidyalaya, Peradeniya was the toast of Badulla when they emerged Cup champions at the Singer All Island Inter Schools Under 18 Rugby Sevens, Division II Tournament worked-off at the Vincent Dias Stadium, Badulla last Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a game where fortunes swung from side to side Sarasavi Uyana lads had to fight all the way to trounce a determined set of boys from Mahanama Navodya College. A fine game of rugby was witnessed by the large number of spectators who gathered at the stadium.

The game got off with speed as both sides made several invasions at each other’s 25. The forward lines of both schools made some breath taking moves in feeding the wingers but the rock solid defence of the back divisions made scoring a tough job in the final.Forwards of both schools playing a die-hard game but at the end it was the lads from Peradeniya crowned as worthy winners carrying away the glittering Singer Cup.

The margin of victory 12-7 bears evidence how the game would have gone as Sarasavi Uyana made use of the few mistakes made by Mahanama forwards. Sarasavi Uyana key player A.C. Alponso was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding efforts taking his alma mater to a well deserved Cup win.

The Plate finals match between Sir John Kothalawela College, Kurunegala and Gintota College never lived upto the standard of the Cup finals as the lads from the rock capital carried the Plate in an one sided affair registering a 54-0 win.The Galle representation, St. Aloysius College were the winners of the ‘Bowl’ with a 20-0 victory over Sri Sumangala, Panadura in the finals.

The final silverware on offer was the ‘Shield’ which made its journey to Maharagama when President’s College defeated St. Luke’s College, Ratnapura. Sri Lanka Rugby Football Association moved the lower tier schools tournament to Badulla which was participated by thirty eight teams was in its view to shortlist prospective players for the forthcoming Asian Under 17 Series.
