Four-year plan for Volleyball Convention on August 26, 27
View(s):The National Volleyball Convention will be held on August 26 and 27 from 9 am onwards at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7.
This is after 25 years that a convention for volleyball is being held in the island.
The two day event is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation. This is the third convention that is being held in Sri Lanka.
The first was held in 1984 under a volleyball interim committee with former Chairman Charitha Ratwatte in the chair.
The second was in 1992, conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation with President Minister Dilan Perera in the chair.
Volleyball President Ranjith Siyambalapitiya is heading the third convention.
Sri Lanka’s national sport is volleyball which is 100 years old this year. To date Sri Lanka has not a medal beyond the South Asian region.
The present set of officials has launched a four year plan in order to win a medal in the South Asian and Asian region.
Coaches, referees and former national captains (men and women), youth captains (men and women), district association secretaries or presidents, volleyball veterans association members, the three armed forces, members of the Police Force and the media will be summoned on August 26 and on August 27 and seven sub-committees will be appointed to draw up a plan. Over 200 members will take part in the convention where the estimated cost is Rs. 1.2 million. A sponsor has already has been found for this.
Volleyball Federation Secretary A.S. Nalaka said that on September 10 the four year plan will be handed over to the Sports Minister. - SP
