The Ministry of Education (MoE) intends to provide overseas training to officers in the Archaeology Dept to develop Archaeology in Sri Lanka. Education Minister Akila Kariyawasam said a team of officers from the Archaeological Dept will be sent overseas to learn modern technologies in conserving and preserving Archaeological sites in the country.

Around 250 Archaeological sites have been identified to be in need of restoration. “We need international level conservation methods to restore them,” he said. The Minister said that a Cabinet paper will be forwarded soon and special allocations made, if the Ministry of Archaeology is unable to fund.

He said plans are also in place to provide grants for new research studies in the field. “Grants will also be provided to writers and scholars who contribute to the field of Archaeology, ” he said.

The ‘Dagoba’, an annual magazine on Archaeology and 8 books written on Archaeology, was launched last week.
A website with information on Archaeological sites and monuments was also started on that day.
