Rohan de Silva wins Highlanders Cup while Fran tops Ladies list

Rohan De Silva won the Highlanders Cup with an outstanding round of 32 Stable-ford points, clear from the next best on 29 points. Fran de Mel was the ladies winner with 20 points from Suni Nirmalalingam. The Defence Service players are gradually making an impact with Group Captain Udula Wijesinghe of the Sri Lanka Air Force winning the Longest Drive Contest on the 4th Hole.

The Sri Lanka Army Training Cantonment, Diyatalawa, home and training ground of Officer Cadets & Gentlemen, from over 100 years ago, elegantly crafted with the pomp and pageantry of the British Empire, reminiscent of the Colonial era of olden day Ceylon, the pearl of the Indian Ocean. The Army Training Cantonment under the British Governor, had a neat and sandy nine hole Golf Course, crafted within the Cantonment and the Officers of the Army did learn the game of Golf.

July 1, 2017, marked the historic ‘Highlanders Cup’ organised by the Sri Lanka Army Golf Association, under the enthusiastic persuasion of the Army Commander garnered with the blessings of the Sri Lanka Golf Union, the governing body of golf in Sri Lanka.

Eighty eight participants from member Golf Clubs in Sri Lanka, the Royal Colombo Golf Club, Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, Victoria Golf and Country Resort, Eagles Golf Links representing the Sri Lanka Air Force and Sandy Bay Golf Links comprising the Sri Lanka Navy golfers, Teed-off.

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunaratne, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, together with the Commander of SLAF Air Marshall Kapila Jayampathi, several Generals, Officers and Gentlemen from the Tri- Defense Services, including retired Senior Officers.

The Awards ceremony was a wonderful spectacle with outstanding entertainment dished out by the Army Band accompanied by exceptional western and traditional dance routines.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka open golf tournament is scheduled to be held in Nuwara Eliya in August and the final dates are yet to be announced.
