Mosquitoes in control

The Dambulla Central Bus Halt and its surroundings have become a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes. State lands in the vicinity of the bus halt being used as garbage dumping grounds has worsened the problem.

The number of dengue patients reported from shops located in the vicinity of the bus halt adds veracity to the statement.
Last week Chandrika Shriyani 38, a mother of three, who owned a clothing shop at the bus halt complex succumbed to dengue. On Friday Chaminda Kumara -a student- also died of the disease.

Many of the 20 patients receiving treatment for dengue at the state hospital were found to be from the shops around the bus halt complex. Dambulla’s Municipal Commissioner, Athma D. Jayaratna, said despite relevant authorities being directed to clean up the location, the directives had been ignored.

While government prosecutes private individuals who it claims leave space for dengue mosquitoes to breed, government-controlled institutions have been found to contain many a breeding ground for the dengue mosquito.
