Nearly 9,000 (8,900) students, or 3.11%, who sat the 2016 GCE Ordinary Level exam in six or more subjects, failed in all subjects, an Exams Dept analysis has revealed.

In the previous year too, almost the same number of students failed in all subjects, the analysis showed.

The highest failure rates are from the Districts affected by the 30-year-old ‘civil war’, with Kilinochchi the worst, with a failure rate of over 8%, while the other Districts with over 4% failing in all subjects are Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee. However, Mannar fared much better with only 1.22% students failing in all subjects.

Outside the war-affected areas, Moneragala and Polonnaruwa Districts had failure rates of over 4%.

A similar trend was observed in the analysis of the 2015 exam results.

Meanwhile, 2.8% or 8,224 students got ‘A’s in all the subjects at the 2016 O/L exam.

Over 13% from Colombo schools got ‘A’s in all the subjects, while the other areas that did well are Kurunegala, Matara, Galle and Ratnapura.

In 2016, 286,251 students sat for five or more subjects at the O/L exam, of which, 200,208 or 69.94% qualified to for the Advanced Level exam.
