The disappearing seafront at Mt Lavinia

Sea erosion along the Mt. Lavinia coast is on the rise causing severe problems to residents and business people alike. Among the worst affected are residents who live in fear of their homes being washed away by the waves.

Several business establishments including hotels, beach-side restaurants and hotels are also among the affected. Hotel owners claim sea erosion now poses a threat to this major tourist attraction in the Colombo district and the tourist industry itself. Residents believe that directions of the ocean currents have changed due to implementation of particular projects in the backwaters which is causing the present sea erosion.

They said officials in the area too had reported on this issue to several responsible organisations and personnel, but all to no avail.

Residents added that in addition to sea erosion the once beautiful beaches are now inundated with plastic waste and other pollutants.
