Five killed in road accidents within 24 hours

Road accidents snatched the lives of five persons over the past 24 hours ending Saturday. Police said three of the accidents involved motor cyclists.
On Friday afternoon a trishaw (three wheeled vehicle) travelling from Awissawella to Galigamuwa collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction along the Awissawella main road. Four people were admitted to Karawanella hospital of whom two died.

The deceased were Rajendra Sampath, 38, of Dehiovita and Rasamma, 58 of Boralankada. The driver of the lorry was arrested. The police probe is continuing.
At Elpitiya the rider of a speeding motorcycle -Prageeth Udaya Kumara 32 of Porawagama- died when he lost control of the bike he was riding. He was admitted to the Elpitiya hospital on Friday, but died subsequently.

On Friday a motorcyclist and pillion rider were injured when their bike crashed into the Colombo-Avissawella train at Padukka. The rider and pillion rider were rushed to the Homagama hospital. Chaavandika Krishanthi, 48, of Padukka succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile at Madampe two persons riding a motorcycle were injured when their vehicle crashed into the wall of the Madampe hospital. Both were admitted to the Chilaw hospital where one of the victims-an 18-year-old died of injuries he suffered.
