Kyle Abeysinghe of Wycherley International School set a new meet record in the Boys 16 and Over 100metre Backstroke Group 1 timed final on the first day of the the 22nd Inter-International School Swimming Championship worked off at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Swimming Complex in Colombo yesterday. Abeysinghe, the younger brother of Sri Lanka’s Olympic swimmer Matthew, clocked 1:03.97 to win the gold medal erasing the previous meet record of 1:06.18 set by him two years ago  while turning out for Asian International School.

Abeysinghe, who swam for Asian International School until last year, competed in the Lane Five in the Timed Final just before the lunch break on the first day of the two-day championship.

Apart from Abeysinghe’s record, two more new meet records were shattered in Individual Medley and Relays by Asian International School in the morning session.

The championships are being conducted under the FINA rules and regulations using electronic timing and the all the individual and relay events are Timed Finals.

All together 836 swimmers (472 male and 364 female) from 21 schools are taking part in this meet, which is conducted by Asian International School (AIS) and sponsored by Nestle PLC’s popular brand MILO, glitz, TECHZONE, Bavarian Motors (Pvt) and Commercial Credit.

The tournament started 22 years ago with the participation of 10 schools in 1994. AIS has been hosting for the past two decades.

The 21 schools, which taking part are: Alethea International School (ALE), Asian International School (AIS), Burhani Serendib (BUR), Colombo International School Kandy (CISK), Colombo International School (CIS), Elizabeth Moir (MOIR), Gateway College, Colombo (GAT), Gateway Kandy (GATK), Leeds Internatinal (LEEDS), Leighton Park (LP), Lyceum Nugegoda (LYC), Lyceum Panadura (LYCP), Lyceum Ratnapura (LYCR), Lyceum Wattala (LYCW), OKI International School (OKI), Overseas School in Colombo (OSC), Regent International College (REG), Royal Institute (RI), Stafford International School (STAF), The British School in Colombo (BSC), Wycherley International School (WYC).
