While investing 15 per cent of its revenue on Research and Development (R&D) last year, Huawei Sri Lanka is setting up a ‘Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Experience Centre’ in Sri Lanka by end November.

Education and innovation of new technology being Huawei’s global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the company has taken this initiative, Shunli Wang CEO of Huawei Sri Lanka, told the Business Times on the sidelines of the launch of ‘Seeds for the Future’ CSR programme that was held at the Prime Minister’s office in Colombo on Tuesday.

Adding to that Mr. Wang noted that this is part of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between Huawei Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure during the visit of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to Huawei in China recently.

“Huawei’s global CSR is focused on education and innovation of new technology. Last year Huawei worldwide invested more than US$ 9 billion that is 15 per cent of its revenue on R&D,” said Mr. Wang.

Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Harin Fernando stressed that Sri Lankan technology and software companies do not pay much attention to R&D. Only 10 per cent of revenue is invested on R&D whereas Huawei Sri Lanka has invested 48 per cent of its revenue in Sri Lanka alone.

This is why China is standing out of other developed countries in the world in terms of ICT tools and technology, he no ted.
