Salary hikes: First judges, then MPs

View(s):

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has given notice of a motion to Parliament to revise the salaries of the Chief Justice, Puisne Judges, President and Judges of the Court of Appeal in five phases from January this year to January 2020.

The notice was placed on the Addendum to the Order Book of Parliament this week.

The increase of the salaries and allowances of judicial officers will have a direct impact on the salaries of MPs because such increases are linked.

Both Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Premier Wickremesinghe have said the salaries and allowances of lawmakers will be revised shortly as the last such hike was effected nearly ten years ago.
