Clerk caught prioritising heart surgeries for ‘something’

An investigation has been launched into an incident where a clerk attached to the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) obtained money to expedite a heart surgery.

The clerk had allegedly taken money to ‘jump’ the waiting list and give priority to a patient down the list. The clerk had got the patient to deposit the money in the clerk’s bank account. The investigation was launched following a complaint by an Army Officer warded at the CNH, who had been told by a patient in the adjoining bed that, he got his operation expedited by paying money.

The Army Officer had been on the list for two months, while the patient who came after him, paid money and given precedence for the surgery.   Investigations revealed the clerk had been conducting this racket to expedite operations for money, without the knowledge of the doctors.
