Lions were tamed at the Astro Turf, Reid Avenue yesterday when S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia scored a fine 5-2 victory over Trinity College at the 13th Warden Neville de Alwis Trophy Under-19 hockey encounter.

The Thomians adapting a fast run and pass game dominated the entire game and at the 3rd minute of the game the school by the sea went ahead when their No. 10 Kaveesh scored off a powerful drive beating the Kandy school custodian. Three minutes later Kaveesh came into action again when he sounded the board for the second time putting the Thomians ahead 2-0.

Trinity stickers never match the fast moving Thomian forwards who kept on attacking the Trinity D area. No. 17 U.A.B. Ellepola scored the third goal for the Thomians in the 16th minute minute while Thomian No. 7 K. Mahawansakkara broke through the Trinity defence to register the fourth Thomian goal. Just five minute away from the breather Trinity No. 3 T. Sangeeth dribbled past a set of Thomian defenders to score the first goal for Trinity. S. Thomas’ led the first half 4-1.

In the 3rd minute of the second half No. 17 U.A.B. Ellepola scored his second goal to register Thomians’ 5th goal. Mid way in the second half Trinity forwards combined together and made a few good moves attempting to break through and at last they were rewarded with a goal scored by No. 2 U. Tharatharam. Trinity defenders deprived the Thomians from scoring further in the second half and the long whistle was blown giving the Thomians a 5-2 win and carried away the Warden Neville de Alwis Trophy.

T.N. Dela of S. Thomas’ was adjudged the Best Player.  H.M.C.H. Bandara and D.T. Panditharatne controlled the game. Thomians beat Trinity 2-0 in the Under-15 match to clinch the B.S.G.
