The writing on the wall was almost there for the Antonians when play ended on day one as they were struggling on 32 for 5 in reply to the home team’s score of 339 for 6 declared.

St Anthony’s after being wrecked by Santhush Gunatilleke who had a four wicket haul on day one had to face another tormentor in Chathura Obeysekera who also ended with a four wicket haul and were bowled out for 114.

The Antonians made to follow-on and left with a daunting task of erasing a deficit of 239 runs was made to struggle for their runs again. Gunatilleke had a repeat performance — this time along with Manelka de Silva, they bundled out the Antonians for a paltry 96.

St. Anne’s Kurunegala pulled off a stunning outright win by 125 runs over fancied De Mazenod in the Under 19 match concluded at Kurunegala yesterday.

The heroes of the Annites were Wanitha Wanninayake and Pubudu Ganegama who put in match winning performances for them. The Annites were nowhere near to victory when play ended on day one as the Mazedonians were sitting pretty having already gained a first inning lead.

Wanitha put in a fine batting performance when he cracked a 103 to help St. Anne’s to end with a score of 247. Later Pubudu who ended with a four wicket haul in the Mazenodian’s first inning ran through their batting with a six wicket haul to bundle De Mazenod in pursuit of 197 runs for victory for just 71 runs. Pubudu ended with a match bag of 10 for 86 runs.

In another shocking outcome saw Bandaranayake MMV Gampaha recorded a close 23 runs win over the much fancied Zahira in the match which ended at Maradana yesterday.

Exchanges were even when play began in the afternoon session of day two with Zahira clawing their way back after being bundled out for 65 in the first inning in reply to their opponents score of 201.

The second day’s proceedings saw Zahira bowlers led by Sajith Sameera along with Aravinth Rajendran and Madhi Namiz combining to bowl out Bandaranayake MMV for a low score of 113.

Zahira left with a target of 250 runs for victory despite a knock of 108 by Sajith Sameera and a half ton by Mohamed Shanaz failed to achieve it as Sisitha Madanayake and Arosha Madushan shared seven wickets restricted the home team to a score o f 226.

In the other matches St. Sebastian’s, Trinity, St. Joseph’s and S de S. Jayasinghe MMV Dehiwala recorded first inning wins over Dharmaraja, Dharmapala, St. Servatius Matara and Taxila Central Horana respectively.
