Trini Lopez live: Disastrous concert

While many loyal fans of Trini Lopez gathered to savour the sounds of his music at the Convention Centre in Colombo last Saturday, for much hyped show, his performance turned out to be quite a shame and scandal by itself leaving  the fans thoroughly disappointed.

The band ‘Smokey’ however did a lot better living up to some of the expectations of the fans.

The show began with Smokey who performed quite well and the backing band too was quite tight and professional.  There was even an encore for Smokey and they did not disappoint with their ever popular hits ‘Have You ever Seen the Rain’ and ‘Alice’.

Smokey was followed by the popular local duo The Lanarolle Brothers with several numbers in quick sessions such as Help Yourself and Spanish Eyes.

After the short break came the legend Trini Lopez and it turned out to be a disaster.  To begin with he was not in sync with the band and there was no coordination between the two at all.  Being the frontline singer he was not even able to lead the band and could not pitch his songs.  He started with a Spanish song from his new album and it was painful listening to it. The song lasted about ten minutes and left   the fans exasperated.  A fellow band member joined him for a song called Holiday   soon after but instead of a holiday; it was also a great bore.

Trini Lopez did not seem to have any idea about what his Sri Lankan fans wanted because he did not sing any of his melodies which are popular with local audiences.  Halfway into his session, many in the crowd were seen leaving the venue.

The only excitement for the fans was when they got chance to jeer loudly when it was announced that Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake was in the venue as the chief guest. In short the show was a disaster. It was sad to notice that the organisers have hoodwinked the real music fans by getting down this kind of artistes and then charging exorbitant rates for shows and  giving such poor performances.
