A move by authorities to temporarily relocate some families displaced by the landslide at Samarasa Hill in Aranayake to a sports ground of a school in the area has met with strong opposition from school officials, students and parents.

A decision had been taken to house some families in temporary tents at the sports ground of the Rivisanda Maha Vidyalaya in Mawathagoda, Aranayake. However, posters opposing the decision were seen all along the school wall on Friday. The posters had been pasted by parents of the school’s students.

In a letter dated 15.6.16, to the Mawanella Education Zone Director, Kegalle District Secretary W.M. Abewickrema said that temporary tents will be put up on the grounds of Rivisanda MMV, Mavathagoda, Dippitiya Muslim MMV, Dippitiya Muslim Junior school, Dippitiya Royal College and Manadhi Junior school. He had asked education officials to inform the principals of these schools regarding this matter and obtain their cooperation.
