Veteran filmmaker Dr. Dharmasena Pathiraja’s latest film ‘Sakkarang’ (A drizzle during a time of drought) which was screened at an international film festival is now being screened at Regal Colombo and other cinemas around the country.

The film which explained the tortuous transformation from feudalism to modernity, was screened at the Asia Cinema Competition of the 7 the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES).

Sakkarang is about a community of traditional dancers who lived in the hinterland of colonial Ceylon (Sri Lanka).Their bonded duty is to perform in the annual festival of the Temple of the Tooth Relic.Set between two rebellions against colonial rule and in romantic and lyrical tones,

the narrative revolves around the story of Sube and Rathi, the chief dancer and his enterprising wife. Their story charts the struggle of this marginal and oppressed caste community for its roots, heritage, for what is rightfully its and for a place in the world, even as the country goes through the tortuous transformation from feudalism to modernity.

Produced by HD Premasiri, ‘Sakkarang’ is scripted by Chamminda Welegedera, assistant direction is by Sugatha Amarajeewa Bandara and Madhavi Lewke Bandara.

Donald Karunarathna handled the cinematography while Lal Harindranatha did the art direction and Imal Chanaka the makeup. Edited by Almo Halide, music composition and direction are by Nadeeka Guruge.
