The government is planning to get on track one of its key ports, Trincomalee as part of a larger development plan for the city.  In this regard, the Trincomalee port’s short term plans are currently in progress where the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is expanding its operations to handle coal starting from end April, the organisation’s Managing Director S. Premachandra told the Business Times recently.  Coal would be transported via the rail track that is also currently being reconstructed by the Sri Lanka Railways, he explained adding that this track would be extended from the jetty to the national grid.

In addition, the SLPA would expand its jetty at the port to 800 metres from its existing 250 metres in anticipation of handling increased cargo in future, the authorities said.  In the meantime, the SLPA is also eyeing the possibility of floating an Request for Proposal (RFP) for business ventures at the eastern Oluvil port.  Mr. Premachandra noted that they were looking at developing this port and as a result they would want businesses to be established there.
