A Brush With Art Vl – an exhibition of paintings by the students of Kumari De Alwis will be held at the Lionel Wendt Gallery on January 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

From her schooldays at St Bridget’s Convent, Kumari De Alwis showed a flair for art and music . She began painting when she was five years old and exhibited her work at school exhibitions.

She trained under veteran art teacher, the late Gate Mudaliyar A.C.G.S. Amarasekera. Her tenure with Amaresekera, she says, is what contributed to what she is today, She later moved on to teach at the Amaresekera School of Art. Kumari also has a Diploma in Commercial Art (London).

Kumari taught at St. Patrick’s College Karachchi and later left to Germany with her husband, where she had the chance to do reproductions of paintings at the art gallery in Frankfurt. She also taught at King’s Castle Christian College in Frankfurt. Her paintings were also exhibited and sold at a gallery in Germany.

Over the past 27 years she has inspired the young and the old to pick up a paint brush, sketch pad or palette knife. She conducts classes at 261/16, Polhengoda Road, Colombo 5, for children from age 4 onwards and for adults, in pastel , water colours, black and white sketching and oils.

This exhibition showcases the work of her senior students.
