“Decent” seizure of vehicles by finance companies over unpaid lease rentals

Seizing of vehicles over unpaid lease rentals by finance companies has become a controversial public issue due to the methods adopted in grabbing these vehicles in public places.Tactics bordering on ‘thuggery’ are used in the seizure of vehicles causing embarrassment to vehicle owners and their passengers.The People’s Leasing & Finance Co (PLC) said that it re-possessed company owned vehicles only through registered seizers of PLC.

“PLC as a company associating closely with people making sure this operation is carried out in a peaceful, lawful and ethical manner safeguarding self-respect of customers,” said D.P. Kumarage, PLC CEO/General Manager, speaking at a recent awareness workshop for registered seizers.In a media release, the PLC said it is the pioneering leasing company in the country to recognise services of seizers and endorse their professional value by offering them with certificates.

The one-day workshop, conducted for 50 registered seizers of PLC at the company auditorium, drew attention to legal aspects of a seizing operation. Seizers were educated on how to regularise procedure of keeping respective police stations informed prior to seizing operations and safeguard of security of citizens and vehicle users to finally ensure quiet possession of the vehicle by its absolute owner (that is the PLC).The workshop further emphasised on scenarios such as pregnant women and aged people being in the vehicle at the time of seize and how the seizers should act in such situations.
