Exhibition Two: metaphysical maze and silk screen prints

Kavan Balasuriya’s Exhibition ‘Two’ was a metaphysical maze. His signature style which was discovered in his time at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design London, is a twist of colours and textures leaning to a standard black and white.

Splayed on Ruby Studios’ walls last month was his dabbling in colour. Themes of religion, science and everything in between were conveyed in the artist’s subtly intricate style.

Some pieces made a second appearance he told us, having dressed the walls at the Barefoot Gallery previously. “If you look closely” he explained, an interesting geometric arrangement of cubes doubled as Kavan’s take on the Dharma-Chakra, “it’s got eight squares.”

Religious undertones reflected in more than just one piece, notably in his ‘Permutation’ series which included bleached black fabric, set against a Rubik rendition based on his cubic Chakra.

His most treasured show pieces however were the muted silk-screen prints. Bathing a photo he snapped of a light bulb “on an oxcart in Burma” a few years ago “I enjoyed making them” he recalls.

Touches of travel and introspection made-up for most of Kavan’s evolutionary Exhibition Two. (Vinusha)
