SLT being the telecommunication service provider for the Elections Commissioners office, counting centres and the media centre, will have a staff of more than 250 working around the clock till the elections come to a close. To ensure smooth communication of results the Commissioner’s office has been given two 1mbps lines to facilitate uploading of the website which is hosted through the SLT internet Data Centre (IDC). The current bandwidth is sufficient to handle increased traffic accessing the department website during the election time, Imantha Wijekoon SLT General Manager for Networks – Macro Region said.

The main counting centre and regional counting centres have been provided with additional communication lines by SLT to ensure uninterrupted communication of results during the counting period. “The network will have no issues handling the load. We have taken all measures to ensure the communication channels deliver uninterrupted, 100 percent reliable services. There is no room for down time,” Mr. Wijekoon assured.

To facilitate the media organisations broadcasting the results SLT has set up a separate VPN through the SLT MPLS cloud. A separate 24-hour support team has been assigned to facilitate the 32 media organisations who have signed up for the service. To ensure uninterrupted services this service has been allocated a backup line as well. If the main line experiences breakdown, the backup line will be connected within 60 seconds.
