A man was shot dead in Oddamavadi in Valachchenai, Batticaloa yesterday afternoon in a suspected politically-motivated killing, raising the pre-election death toll to four, an independent election monitor said.

Mohamed Ameen, aged 37, a supporter of a candidate from the Eastern Province was shot dead by unknown assailants while he was returning home on his motorcycle. According Keerthi Tennakoon of the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) the victim was also identified as a witness in a murder committed last year where a member of a political party was subsequently sentenced to death.

A senior policeman based in the area said police were investigating the incident with an open mind but did not rule out political implications. A special team has been deployed to trace the culprit.
