MS Chief Guest at Maldives Golden Jubilee

President Maithripala Sirisena will leave today on a State visit to the Maldives, where he will be the Chief Guest at its 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. The President will be accompanied by Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake and senior government officials, the President’s Office said.

President Sirisena on arrival in the Maldives tomorrow afternoon will be welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour.
He will participate at the official ceremony in Male to mark the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the Maldives and at the reception to be held later tomorrow evening.

He will also pay a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.President Sirisena and his delegation will return to Sri Lanka on July 27. Sri Lanka and the Maldives established formal diplomatic relations on July 26, 1965.
Thus, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
