A deadly spell of left arm leg spin bowling by Amila Aponsu (2-1-1-6 wickets, including a hat-trick) gave EWIS their first MCA title, as they beat Union Assurance PLC by a massive margin of 132 runs, in the 13th David Pieris Group of Companies sponsored, DPGC Challenge Trophy, MCA ‘E’ Division 30 Over League Tournament 2015 Final, concluded at the MCA Grounds, last weekend.

Amila Aponsu was brought in to the attack in the 12th over with the Union Assurance board reading 62 for 3. Aponsu straight away went into business by performing the hat-trick, bagging the vital wickets of Faizal Aron (13), skipper Sumudu Wijesinghe (10) and Eric Upashantha (00), thus placing Union Assurance in looking down the barrel at 63 for 6.
In his next over Aponsu accounted for Mahesh de Alwis (stumped), Aruna Meemanage and Kasun Liyanage, as UAL sank to the bottom.

Earlier on, EWIS, who won the toss and batted, put up a challenging total of 202/9 in 30 overs, their inning spearheaded by the two half centurions, Tissa Bandara (57 not out in 58 balls, inclusive of two sixes and five fours) and Charith Fernando (51 in 50 balls inclusive of seven boundaries), who were associated in a 95 runs partnership for the fifth wicket. Union Assurance skipper Sumudu Liyanage (3/35) was the pick of the bowlers.

Match Referee cum Adjudicator, Pemlal Fernando had things easy, as he named Amila Aponsu from EWIS as the Man of the Match. The other three special awards went to Best Bowler Amal Atapattu from Unilever (eight matches 36.2 overs, 171 runs, 19 wickets best 6 for 1 including a hat-trick Vs. Galadari Hotel); Best Batsman, Sachintha Himal Fonseka from Eagle Logistics (seven innings, 372 runs, one not out, Avg. 62.0, best 125 Vs. MAS Active ‘B’ and 94 Vs. Softlogic Finance) and Man of the Tournament, Heshan Wanniarachchi from EWIS (nine matches, 387 runs and 15 wickets for 163 runs)

The MCA hosted the Cricketers from Blind School, Ratmalana for lunch. They played an exhibition Cricket Match during the lunch interval. The MCA presented them with a Memento Plaque, Medallions and a Cash Donation which were given away by Sri Lanka Coach, Marvan Atapattu.

The post tournament awards presentation was followed by the final, the presenters were Divisional Manager/DPMC (Guest-of-Honour), Gamini Wickramasinghe, President Rohana Dissanayake, General Secretary and Duminda Pinto, Member Tournament Committee (all from MCA)

Debutants, QP Employment performed a remarkable feat by scoring three successive wins in four days, in the ongoing, 02nd Sierra IT Trophy, MCA ‘F’ division 25 Over League Tournament last week-end, and on Poya Day.

On Saturday, QP Employment beat Gummi Lanka by 18 runs and back to back on Sunday, beat MJF Group by eight wickets and went on to beat Alliansz Insurance by 122 runs on Tuesday (Poya Day); QP employment’s opening batsman, T.S. Irudeen carried his bat out scoring a hurricane 153 not out in 87 balls, inclusive of a dozen sixes and an equal number of fours, spearheading them to a huge 122 runs win over Alliansz Insurance.

QP Employment have now completed their quota of matches with six wins and one loss.The other Centurions were: Gayan Maduranga from Coutaulds Clothing (107 in 64 balls, with eight sixes and six fours Vs. Asiri Hospitals); Janaka Nuwan from Technomedics (104 in 57 balls, inclusive of eight sixes and five fours Vs Coutaulds Clothing); Faiz Ahamed from EB Creasey (100 not out in 70 balls, inclusive of seven sixes and five fours Vs.
