The prices of many vegetables have reduced sharply in the Jaffna Peninsula over the past one week with farmers saying excess produce was being sent to other parts of the country.

A kilo of green chillies was yesterday selling at Rs.300, carrot at Rs. 140, capsicum at Rs. 300, tomatoes at Rs. 240, cabbage at Rs. 100, brinjals at Rs. 100 and string beans at Rs. 120 per kilo, officials at the Thirunelvely vegetable market in Jaffna said.

During the whole of last week green chillies were selling at Rs. 700 per kilo, carrot at Rs. 300, capsicum at Rs. 400, tomatoes at Rs. 360, cabbage at Rs. 200, brinjals at Rs. 240 and string beans at Rs. 240 per kilo.

Meanwhile officials at the Dambulla Economic Centre (DEC) said yesterday that they expect the price of vegetables to be reduced in the next few days with more and more produce arriving from the North.

They added that in comparison to the prices at Jaffna the prices of vegetables sold at the DEC were relatively higher but this situation is expected to change within the next few days.

The prices of most vegetable both low grown and high grown have remained at an all time high over the past several weeks owing to the recent inclement weather experienced in most parts of the country that left large areas of farm land destroyed with many farmers internally displaced.
