Several leading astrologers predicted doom for some of their colleagues who made false prophecies for political gain, bringing the profession into disrepute.

They held a protest in Colombo this week, denouncing those astrologers who made false predictions due to political reasons. They said the people would lose faith in astrology, which has been practised in this country for centuries.

Well-known Astrologer K.A.U. Sarachchandra said some of the astrologers with links to the Presidential Secretariat had made false claims in newspapers and on TV programmes during the run-up to the recent presidential election to please their political masters.Without identifying anyone by name, he said one astrologer was also conducting astrology courses and awarding degrees although he had no authority to do so.

“We will go to the Bribery Commission next week to lodge a complaint against this astrologer and his corrupt activities,” Mr. Sarachchandra said.
