India is watching the progress of the hundred-day proramme closely Indian High Commissioner Y. K. Sinha said, adding that India was ready to help in domestic and diplomatic affairs.

He made these remarks yesterday addressing the India Society dinner to mark the Republic day of India which fell on January 26.
Expressing his confidence in the 100-day programme, he said he believed that the government would achieve its goal.

Sri Lanka needs to unite all its citizens and take heed of the aspirations of all Sri Lankans and then move head, he said, adding that the national question in the country had an impact on India as well.

The High Commissioner also expressed optimism that trade relations between the two countries would be strengthened. He also appreciated the move by Foreign Minister Managala Samaraweera to visit India as his first official visit and said India looked forward to receiving President Maithripala Sirisena next month.

Highlighting the importance of reconciliation and moving ahead, he said, “The solution has to be a political one. And I think we are fortunate that in Sri Lanka we have a Government of National Unity.”

“I think it is important to realise that India and Sri Lanka must work together, to ensure there is peace and prosperity not only in Sri Lanka but also in India, in fact the entire region. I am confident we can, as long as we can talk to each other and not talk at each other”.
