Sweet gift ideas

The season of presents is still upon us and for those who enjoy sweet gifts we’ve put together some options for those who have a soft spot for food. Some of these could also serve as apt alternatives for traditional Christmas cake, Love cake, Date cake etc. that one would gift when doing a round of house visits. Good manners aside, you could even tuck into them yourself.

Christmas Pudding
The first thing on our ‘nice’ list is a product that has sprouted in the past few years- home-made Christmas pudding. Colourfully dressed pots of pudding, perched on counter tops at supermarkets are a good idea to gift, in terms of both taste and appearance. Festive wrapping finished off with ribbon allow for just picking them off the shelf and gifting- an ideal on-the-go present.

We’ve scouted two brands of potted pudding already out for the season. One of them is Christine’s home-made Christmas pudding and the other is by Yumi Cakes. Christine’s product is more dramatically wrapped and comes with a little tag which includes a recipe for brandy butter along with ‘to’ and ‘from’ provisions for you to fill-out. Both brands have microwave friendly containers that allow for quick heating. Yumi’s version comes in a ceramic bowl which means a little caution when it comes to transporting. Christine’s Christmas pudding costs almost Rs.800 for 500gs and Yumi’s comes to Rs.925.

Double chocolate brownie
Another possible worthy stop would be Skrumptious. In operation for just 4 short months, the bakers’ seasonal offering is their signature double chocolate brownie. The just-right consistency and rich fudgy burst of flavour in their product, while making them an easy favourite among chocolate addicts also could make a worthy substitute for a seasonal desert.

What makes the brownies ideal for gifting is the neat wooden gift-box that they come in. Dainty dull-gold doodle-like print on its lid, the box holds 750gs of the good stuff which along with the special wooden casing costs Rs.2850. You could even personalize the wooden box with a customized print if the order exceeds a 100 pieces they tell us. Skrumptious also has a simple black box version that gives the brownies a very ‘special-edition’ feel. You could drop in to Skrumptious on a visit at No. 3 Sulaiman Terrace, Colombo 05.

Seasonal sweets
An appreciated gift in a household with children would have to be candy. More specifically, Christmas candy. A happy coincidence, Yum-Yum Fine Foods is in a doubly celebratory mood. Finishing up one successful year in the business, they have a 20percent slash on all their gummies. Perhaps among the more reasonable price-range for their products at a flat Rs.260 for 100gs of most candy, makes for a decent bargain.

Apart from the ever-green gummy-bears and cola worms, they have a few seasonal pickings on offer as well. Candy canes at Rs.200 each and some Christmas-edition Cadburys are among the more festive of the selection. They also do candy hampers and even little pockets of candy to fit any budget. These would also look inviting on a Christmas table, given the detailed packing.

The tiny bags of candy could be customised to contain the kinds that you have a particular attraction to. Give them a ring on 0777221020 for more information. If there should be a catch at all, it would be that they are located down Kawdana Road in Dehiwala.
