Mercedes-Benz Rally held to commemorate the Berlin Wall Anniversary

The Mercedes-Benz Club recently organised a fun rally to commemorate the “25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall”.

The rally started off from the new “DIMO 800” premises and ended up at the Viharamahadevi Park, where the festivities took place at the Open Air Theatre.

President -Mercedes Club of Sri Lanka Upali Kapilasena disclosed that 22 Mercedes-Benz cars took part at this event, out of which 15 were classics.

Different vintage vehicles added colour to the rally, which also included the latest Mercedes-Benz models. The club members were welcomed by the German Ambassador Dr. Jürgen Morhard, according to media release issued by DIMO, sole agent for the Mercs brand of cars.

Mercedes-Benz models including 280SE Sedan, 280SE Coupe, W108, W110, W115, W123 Station Wagon (one of a kind) and the Mercedes-Benz young classic range such as W124, W126, and the Mercedes-Benz SL range R107 and R129, the newer generation of Mercedes-Benz cars, which included the Mercedes-Benz CLK, the Mercedes-Benz C207 E-Class Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz W221 and the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205 took part in the rally .

“The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic or East Germany, and the sole purpose of the barrier was to cut off West Berlin from East Germany and East Berlin. The barrier included guarded towers placed along large concrete walls.

The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded with East Germany and West Germany unified as one nation,” the local Mercs agency said.

DIMO, which has represented the best engineered brands from Germany for more than seven decades, also took part in the anniversary event and the rally, as the only authorised distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Sri Lanka. DIMO Chairman Ranjith Pandithage and his wife, Gahanath Pandithage (CEO-DIMO), Tharanga Gunawardena (GM-Mercedes Service) and Rajeev Pandithage (Head of Sales – Mercedes-Benz) were present at this event, whilst members of the Mercedes-Benz Club of Sri Lanka EXCO were also present with their families.
