Kandy was at the receiving end when the Junior World Rugby Tournament (JWRT) 2014 which was initially opted to be hosted in Kandy was not preferred over Colombo. The Under-20 tournament will now take place at the Racecourse Rugby Grounds from September 21 to 28 with four teams participating in it.

Sri Lanka, the hosts along with Korea, Hong Kong and Taipei will battle it out for the top option with the team ending on top getting the Junior Rugby World Cup play off for Lisbon in Portugal next year. According to the governing body Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) at the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Executive Council meeting most of the participating teams opted for Colombo instead of Kandy due to the travelling factor and returning back to the Airport soon after the match, awards ceremony and Dinner hosted by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU).
