The first time they were here, almost a decade ago, India-based theatre company Poor Box Productions performed the Vagina Monologues to a curious, unsure audience, leaving them enlightened and applauding by the time of the curtain call. Seated in the audience was Priyanganie Mushin, current president of Zonta III Colombo, on whom this play created a lasting impression.

Hoping to impart the same experience on Colombo once more, the Zonta Club III of Colombo will present the Vagina Monologues in Colombo once again with Poor Box Productions today, at 3.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. at the British School auditorium. The cast hopes to give their audience close to one and a half hours of laughter, tears and understanding along with the Club’s message of saying no to violence against women.

Written in 1996 and based on over 200 real life interviews of women, Eve Ensler’s Monologues echo the idea of liberation and celebration of women. “I think people who come will know why they’re there” reflects Priyanganie. “There in itself, buying a ticket will be as though they are resonating the cause.” The club is passionate in their advocacy of creating awareness of domestic violence and campaigning against the abuse and harassment of women.

With a cast of celebrated stage performers, this production is directed by Mahabanoo Modi Kotwal, well known director, producer and actress of film and stage.

Be there as Zonta Club III Colombo presents Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” in collaboration with Poor Box Productions today at the British School Colombo Auditorium at 3.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. Tickets for the performance are priced at Rs 5000, Rs 4000, Rs 3500, Rs 2500 and Rs 1500 available at the British School of Colombo. The play is strictly for adults.
