For the majority of the general public to contemplate buying an electric car, they first need easily reachable public charge points near places they frequent in their daily life.

In this backdrop, Mackwoods Energy PLC’s (MEP) sales of electric vehicle charging units to electric car importers and petrol station owners, will play a big role in electric-car adoption, as they will allow short-range battery-electric vehicles to get to destinations they couldn’t conveniently do otherwise.

Arjuna Yatawara, Managing Director MEP told the Business Times that the company imported 45 charging units and has already sold 15 to electric car importers and also petrol shed
owners.

He added that the petrol shed owners have the infrastructure to build charging stations and the MEP will promote these units amongst them. “The benefit of electric cars is that they lessen fuel costs radically because of the low cost of electricity relative to conventional fuel.

Because they rely in whole or part on electric power, their fuel economy is measured differently than in conventional vehicles. Also they don’t produce the pollution associated with internal combustion engines,” Mr. Yatawara said, pointing out that another main advantage of battery-powered motors over gas-powered engines is the lower cost of the fuel – that is, electricity for electric vehicle is way cheaper than gas for the internal combustion engines. In conventional cars, the car battery is used for lights, starting the engine, AC, etc while petrol or diesel fuels the car. In the case of the electric car, the battery serves all these purposes including fueling the car.
