Several generations have passed since the evolution of technology and now looking back, there exists a generation which has never known the term ‘technology’ and unwilling to learn what it is all about.

Theories and studies show that it is the mindset and misinterpretation of the generation that leads them to be reluctant in learning what Information Technology (IT) is all about and how it can help them in their day-to-day lifestyles.

Now the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS) has taken the task of educating the different age group of generations through the 13th INFOTEL exhibition. The 3-day exhibition will be held from October 24 to 26 at the BMICH in Colombo. Leading IT industrialists have partnered with the FITIS in taking the IT industry of Sri Lanka forward.

Speaking to the Business Times on the sidelines of the launch, FITIS Chairman Chinthaka Wijewickrama said, “We have a social responsibility to educate the youth of the country. The key area that we at FITIS are looking at this year is educating the elderly, the sector which the country has neglected.”

The INFOTEL exhibition used to be held once in two years, but now the need has become so much and the federation planned to have it every year. The technology which is there today will be different in another three to four months. An exhibition of this nature would showcase the latest technology to the Sri Lankan public, he noted.

At the exhibition this year FITIS is planning to address business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumers (B2C) and the people who are interested in making IT their future career. People who use the latest smartphones, tablets, scanners are the ones who are interested in IT and who is the main audience captured at the exhibition, added Mr. Wijewickrama.

With Sri Lanka poised to be the IT hub in the region, INFOTEL will focus on the country’s national growth and will be the platform to showcase everyday products and services as a whole new world of intelligent devices and systems. Also it will be giving special attention to eight segments namely Software Solutions, Hardware and Digital Devices, ICT Education and Training, Mobile Computing, Systems Integration, Computer Gaming, Cloud Computing and emerging technologies. The theme of this years’ INFOTEL 2014 is ‘For a Smarter Tomorrow’.
