Power behind Lanka’s economy : Central Bank Governor Ajit Nivaard Cabraal and Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera, arguably the most powerful state-appointed officials, seem to enjoy a joke while moderator Mano Tittawela, a once-powerful administrator under former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, appears oblivious to the chit-chat (or was he pretending not to eavesdrop?). This happened during the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce’s economic summit on Tuesday. Privately, Cabraal and Jayasundera are known to disagree on monetary policy, the prerogative of the Central Bank. However this warm exchange may have dispelled such reports or is this just for public record? Readers’ views invited!
